The HBOT Basics

What is HBOT? (Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy)

How long has HBOT been around?

If you’re like me you’ll be quite surprised to know it’s been around for about 400 years – but it became more popular around the time the Brooklyn Bridge was being constructed in NY in the 1870’s and 80’s.  You got it right – the 1870’s. So it’s been around a lot longer than most people would imagine – click here to find out more.  The workers who became sick with “the bends” were treated with Oxygen therapy in a Hyperbaric Chamber when the supervisors realized why so many of their men were getting sick.

Are there side effects of HBOT?

Yes, but they are usually mild. Ear pressure/popping similar but more pronounced to what you would feel on a plane is the most common one. Learning to equalize the pressure in your ear canal will quickly alleviate this issue for all but a few. Try swallowing / making the motion of chewing gum / massaging the backs of your ears or holding your nose (close your mouth) and gently blow. This will equalize the pressure most folks feel in their ears, once equalized, there’s no other sensation of the increased pressure inside the Chamber.

Another side effect of mHBOT that’s fairly common is that it can make one sleepy or sleep better. Believe it or not, others can feel energized. So, the effects of mHBOT can be dramticaaly different from one person to the next and I’ve personally experienced becoming tired/ sleepy and energized after dives.

Is there any pain associated with using a Hyperbaric Chamber?

Not that we’ve personally experienced; ear popping is the main issue, though it should never become painful since the user is in control of how quickly or slowly a Chamber inflates/deflates and pressurizes. If your ears are giving you any trouble when inflating the Chamber you can either open the manual release valve to slow the increase in pressure or turn the compressor off briefly from inside the chamber with the provided remote.

I’ve found for the vast majority of the population that pain means we’re pressurizing – too quickly.            Clinics may pressurize a client quickly in order to get to full pressure —- rapidly. This pay by the minute approach leaves alot to be desired. Owning a Chamber or renting by the month eliminates the need to pressurize quickly in an atttempt to get to pressure without delay. Relax / Skip the pain – Let’s take it slow and Enjoy every HBOT minute!

Also, when exiting the Chamber, you will be in control of the rate of deflation (the speed at which the air pressure escapes the Chamber). You will have the ability to turn the compressor off with your remote and by turning the release valve adjust the flow of air leaving the Chamber – a slower decrease in pressure will allow time for your ears to equalize naturally. You will be instructed on several techniques to equalize. Taking it slow when increasing and decreasing pressure is certainly the key to keeping HBOT sessions Comfortable.                                                                            If you’ve ever been scuba diving – equalizing the pressure in your ears was not only necessary but slowed or stopped some from reaching their intended depth. I’ve found it much easier to equalize my ears in a Chamber compared to in the water.

Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) safe?

Yes, it’s very safe. But like walking – there’s risks that need to be properly addressed.  Learning the rules of the road, when to cross the street and when it’s not safe to cross – is similar to the rules of the Chamber.

I’ll give you an example from real life.

Soft shell Hyperbaric chambers are air tight which means no air flows in or out when the compressors are turned off due to the airtight nature of the chamber. So, the one danger that must be avoided is remaining in a chamber for more than 10 minutes once the compressor or compressors are turned off with the manual valve closed. OK – that’s alot to take in so let’s back up.

A person in the chamber is breathing the fresh air and oxygen that being delivered via the compressor and oxygen concentrator which is outside the chamber.

Are All soft shell Hyperbaric Chambers FDA Cleared or Registered?

The FDA has approved this therapy for Acute Altitude Sickness aka mountain Sickness ONLY!  Doctors and other Health care professionals recommend it for many other “off-label” conditions. Professional athletes and other serious competitors use mHBOT as part of their normal recovery routine.

Did you know?

Tim Tebow / Jeremy Renner and many other famous persons use mHBOT on a regular basis.  Animals are also treated in mild hyperbaric chambers and most of them seem to Enjoy the experience.

Let’s Talk – There is much confusion regarding this topic and after researching I can share my thoughts with you although, I must begin by mentioning this is my best interpretation of what I’ve learned in my research.

Are All soft shell Hyperbaric Chambers FDA Cleared?

The short answer is  – No.

There are many folks that insist that FDA cleared chambers are the only safe and/or effective chambers on the market today. I have personally purchased in excess of one thousand (1,000) soft and hard shell hyperbaric chambers over the past 11 years and therefore have a BIG advantage over most other “so called” experts on this subject.                                          My experience  is specific to 7 manufacturers and therefore they are the only ones I can speak on with any authority.

What I’ve witnessed in 11 years and 1000 purchases:

1) FDA cleared chambers are more expensive and have less features than non-FDA cleared chambers.

2) FDA Soft Shell chambers are ALL lower pressure and yet have higher incidence of zipper/ window and seam failures. Many of  these chambers have poor quality  polycarbonate windows which translate into windows that become cloudy and are easily scratched and yellow over time. This problem is non-existent on OxyRevo soft chambers, apparently they have reworked the polycarbonate formulation and what we have are windows that are crystal clear and never cloud / haze or yellow. They have also proven much more scratch and scuff resistant – over time.

NOTE: To be Clear – None of the FDA cleared soft-shell chambers are dangerous in any way – but, in my experience are more likely to experience warranty issues are less powerful and are more expensive to purchase. These 3 factors together are the reason that AHS has traveled the globe in search of better quality equipment – that’s more Effective and Affordable for our clients.

Windows are just one of the many features on a Hyperbaric chamber. I could also go into great detail regarding Frames. The same scenario plays out – frames that are made for chambers that are fDA cleared are sub standard and many break quite easily. PVC is a plastic that has many useful purposes – but using it for holding up a hyperbaric chamber is in my opinion a poor choice.

Most manufacturers agree and have selected metal frames which are more rugged and rarely break like their PVC counterparts. I requested a non FDA manfacturer to increase the thickness of their stainless steel internal frame so that it would also be strong enough to allow a large person to use it while moving from a sitting to a standing position. To my surprise – they made the improvement and I had a double thick frame in record time at no additioanl charge. I could go system by system and talk about zippers and welds and TPU fabric but each time the story reads the same.

My conclusion:

Being selective concerning where you decide to get your information and whom you trust is critical in geeting to the crux. I do not consider myself an expert in this field but rather a person who has a better vantage point than most other online “experts”.  Many so called experts have never purchased a single chamber or dealt with a single warranty issue and others have purchased just a single chamber that they use personally. This allows them to speak on that specific product purchased but does not make them an expert on the many other brands and products that are available today, nor does it give them insights on the many warranty issues that arise on the various brands and how well or poorly these issues are handled by their respective manufacturers.

I recently dealt with a vet that insisted that a dog being treated for cancer needed to be treated in an FDA cleared chamber.  Now, that same vet also sold only a single brand of chamber that just so happened to also be FDA cleared.  I mentioned that the FDA clearance didn’t apply to cancer treatment and also didn’t extend to animals – But, that made no difference to this veterinarian. So, I sold a NT 40 Inch chamber to this client and Saved her about $5,000.00 / the Vet had no choice but to continue seeing this furry patient.

This is just one example of how the FDA designation is being improperly applied in an attempt to scare/ pressure folks into believing that only certain more expensive equipment should be considered as safe and effective. My expereince had led me to conclude the opposite side is closer to the truth.

I’m happy to dive deeper on this subject if you are interested. Please Ask for Brian Sr. when you call.

Is the Oxygen that is produced by a Concentrator flammable?

An Oxygen concentrator  provided by AHS delivers medical grade oxygen (above 87% pure) BUT  doesn’t compress the oxygen and therefore won’t allow it to ignite if a spark is present. The air we breathe (ambient) contains about 21% oxygen – that oxygen cannot be ignited because it’s not under enough pressure and the 02 purity is simply too low. The Oxygen in a C ylinder Is highly concentrated and Under EXTREME Pressure, therefore it is VERY Flammable.  Note: Affordable Hyperbaric Solutions does not use Oxygen Cylinders or or Oxygen Bottles on any of our chambers – Ever!

Oxygen flowing from an Oxygen concentrator/ generator isn’t flammable since it’s not under pressure and therefore – uncompressed.  Hence, it’s much safer than O2 Tanks / Cylindres or Bottles.

To err on the side of caution:

Let’s remember – the area where the Oxygen flows is O2 enriched. Combustibles in the enriched zone are more combustible than what would be considered normal. That’s the reason that open flame (i.e. candles and  lighters) are not permitted within 6 ft of an oxygen enriched zone.

Better yet, no smoking or open flames in the room where you use your Oxygen Concentrator. Let’s stay safe! In fact, we recommend you post a sign – No Smoking or Open Flame – Oxygen in Use.

And NEVER Fill the Chamber with Oxygen from an O2 Concentrator or Oxygen Cylinder, always use the Air compressor provided to pressurize your mild Hyperbaric chamber and enrich the air with your O2 concentrator.

How Long Should I use my the Hyperbaric Chamber?

For best results, it’s recommended to use the hyperbaric chamber for 60-90 minutes per session, 5-6 times per week.

What’s the Difference Between 1.4 ATA and 1.5 ATA?

A 1.5 ATA hyperbaric chamber operates at a higher pressure than a 1.4 ATA chamber. This increased pressure can enhance the effectiveness of oxygen therapy, poten-
tially leading to better results in the same amount of time.

Is Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) safe?

Yes, it’s very safe. But like walking – there’s risks that need to be properly addressed. Learning the rules of the road, when to cross the street and when it’s not safe to cross
– is similar to the rules of the Chamber.

The AHS ABC’s of HBOT

Do I need a prescription to lease or purchase a Chamber?

Yes, a Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber (higher than normal atmospheric pressure) is a Class II medical device and requires a prescription in ALL cases according to federal laws. We can provide a referral for a prescription after we review the contraindications of mHBOT. It’s always up to the doctor to make the final decision as to whether to provide an mHBOT script.

Once you give us the go ahead – we’ll request your script.

We’ll need your Legal Name / Address / Birthday and Brief Dx. Note: Scripts are $75 each.

What should I wear in the chamber?

Be comfortable!  Loose fitting clothes (sweats or pajamas) are a great thing to wear.  Don’t wear shoes or any sharp objects (such as jewelry). Compressed air inside the Chamber is usually warmer than room air, so some people use a battery operated fan and will bring in a bottled water.

What does it feel like to be in a Hyperbaric Chamber?

That’s a hard one – it definitely gets warm after about 15 minutes so the battery powered fan that’s provided in summer can become a good companion. The main sensation is the pressure you’ll feel in your ears that’s similar to swimming to the bottom of a pool or being in a airplane that’s landing. So, if I asked you how does it feel to be in an airplane or swim to the bottom of a pool – you’ll begin to understand the feeling.

But really, the chamber is now just part of my life – I know that I’ll feel better and breathe better if l use it regularly. I live just north of Denver and our elevation is about 5,300 feet above sea level – I never adjusted to this altitude when I moved – from much closer to sea level in NJ. I do many different activities in the Chamber that make the time go by quickly. In fact, I’m usually not ready to exit the Chamber when my alarm rings. But that’s me – you’ll need to decide if the Chamber is a quiet restful time or a time to catch up on emails and calls. You can read, exercise and use your smartphone / tablet as well.

How do you describe “a dive” to folks unfamiliar with a Hyperbaric Chamber?

That question took me by surprise and really made me think. Here’s the best I could come up with – Imagine for a moment that a person entering the Chamber is actually getting into a super fast / super tall elevator – one that would transport them to about 12 ft. below sea level in about 2 minutes. When you remember that we live at about 5,300 feet above sea level, that’s a pretty remarkable feat in 120 seconds. That’s a drop in altitude of about 2600 feet per minute – like I said a really fast/ really tall elevator. Hence the name – “Dive”.

The sensation is only felt in the ears and barring that – you’d have no idea the pressure was increasing inside a hyperbaric chamber. That’s always surprised me – the only way to feel the increase in pressure is through the ear and sinuses.

Can I sleep in the Chamber?

We don’t recommend sleeping in the Chamber, but we do suggest Relaxing / Stretching / Reading / Exercising / Listening to music / Studying / Texting / Calling / Playing games / Eating and drinking (no forks /knives or hot liquids – please). Sleeping is NOT recommended because hyperbaric chamber zippers are air tight when closed. If the power should go out due to a tripped circuit breaker / blown fuse or a power outage and you’re sleeping – that could get dangerous. There’s plenty of oxygen inside a chamber to allow the user to exit slowly if the power is lost – but if that person is sleeping / unaware and using up the available O2 – things could end up, Let’s just say – Not so Good!          If you wish to sleep in the chamber – you’ll need to have someone monitor you and check on you every 15 minutes to confirm the motors are operating properly.

We will provide a Saftey Alarm with each chamber that will alert the user if the power fails  for any reason. Please begin exiting the chamber if the power fails and the motors stop running.

Why is sleeping in the chamber not advisable?

Safety is our number one priority! There have been very rare cases of someone falling asleep in a Chamber. When the power shuts off, for any number of reasons, a person who was awake would likely recognize the noise level change (the compressor would turn off) and begin the deflation process to exit the chamber. Most newer chambers also come with an alarm to alert the occupant of a power outage (if you are hearing impaired please inform your trainer). Note: every person (that’s you) exhales carbon dioxide each time they breathe – this depletes the air of oxygen in a sealed environment such as a hyperbaric chamber. A compressor runs constantly during a “treatment” to supply fresh air. This air is released through a relief valve that is set to actuate at 4.4 psi. In the rare case the compressor shuts off during a treatment – simply exit the chamber as you would normally. The oxygen level will remain at a safe level for your normal exit time frame (2-5 minutes). If this explanation is not clear – please consult a qualified hyperbaric consultant or call us at 857-CHAMBER

Do I need to provide anything to treat myself at home or does AHS provide everything?

Pillows and a blanket or Comforter make the Chamber experience more cozy. You’ll also need to provide a safe power supply (medium duty extension cords are recommended – if needed).  If you have questions concerning your electrical outlets – please consult a qualified electrician and Always remember to use your Safety Alarm.

How should I clean the Chamber?

A small hand held vacuum and a damp cloth is all you’ll need to keep the Chamber clean.

Please don’t use any harsh soaps or chemicals on the Chamber itself, you can wash your pillow case and blankets as usual. And Yes, you can use white vinegar and warm water to clean your chamber – a capful per gallon is our formula. You don’t want the chamber to smell like grandma’s pickles. We also use a dampened magic eraser for tougher stains. Dry your chamber before replacing your mattress or chair with a Fan.

I clean the inside from inside during a “dive” session and inflate the chamber to clean the exterior.

Dawn dishwashing soap is also ok – if used sparingly.

Where does AHS set up the Chamber in a home?

We set up near a receptacle usually on the floor. If you have pets or children, it’s best to place it behind closed doors. If that’s not possible, you’ll need to cover the chamber and air hose with a clean tarp or heavy blanket to protect it from sharp claws and teeth. The Chamber can be similar to an abandoned fridge, in that it’s airtight when sealed. Smaller children will likely not be able to zip the chamber closed, but older ones probably could, so instruct children and grandchildren that live with you or visit concerning the potential dangers of a Hyperbaric Chamber.  A very stable platform is available at $199 per rental – so whether you keep the chamber for 1 month or 6 months – it’s $199.

** Please note that heavily soiled Chambers returned to AHS will incur a $250 cleaning charge, frankly, we’d prefer you return the Chamber in a reasonable state, so we don’t need to charge you this added fee.

What are the AHS rules of the Chamber?

  1. Be sure ALL Zippers are closed completely and all Safety Belts are fastened before inflating the Chamber.
  2. Periodically check the airflow from the Compressors / Concentrator with your finger to confirm air is flowing.
  3. The Compressor must be running during your entire “dive” up until the time you are ready to exit (unless you want to shut it off momentarily for equalization of your ears).
  4. The auto relief valve should be releasing air constantly when the chamber is at full pressure.
  5. DO NOT open a Zipper until the Chamber is COMPLETELY depressurized (pressure gauge reads 0).

Is it scary to take a dive?

Not for most folks, some are a little intimidated – but after they feel that the pressure can only be felt in their ear canals and only briefly – the vast majority relax and enjoy the experience. It’s like a spa treatment once you’re used to it, calming and serene.

Can I run a Compressor and an Oxygen Concentrator in the same outlet?

Good question – usually yes – but again that depends on your particular house wiring and other considerations. Most newer homes will have no problem running both units*. Please seek the advice of a qualified electrician if you have any doubts.
*Receptacles are wired with up to 10 “outlets” on 1 circuit – if a particular circuit already has a space heater turned on – that circuits available power would be very limited. A compressor plugged into the same line or “circuit” will undoubtedly trip a breaker or blow a fuse. This is a safety mechanism built into all electrical systems. If your compressor trips a breaker – we recommend moving your chamber to another area of the home. If an extension cord must be used as a temporary measure – it should be rated to handle the load. Use of a medium to heavy duty extension would be advised – under these circumstances. Some chambers are supplied with 2 compressors. If an 02 concentrator is also used – you’d be running 3 small motors. Newer homes will likely not have a problem running these 3 – but, older electrical systems will likely trip breakers/fuses. If needed, run an extension cord to another room and watch for tripping/falling hazards. For your Safety – Always Keep Smoke detectors and Co detectors working properly. 1 per Bedroom is req’d by Current Code. Smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years or as advised by the manufacturer.

Note: If your detectors are Yellow, they’re Old – Replace them!!

Can I Treat myself while I am sick with a Cold or Flu?

Treatments are not recommended during aforementioned illnesses. Also, allergies that cause blocked nasal passages are an indication to avoid use of the Chamber until the symptoms clear up. Blockage in your ears or sinuses can cause you to have a hard time adjusting to pressure and can lead to a headache. If you have a doctor’s note – we will allow up to 1 additional week at no charge – so that you don’t miss out on any of your treatments.

Can I use the Chamber when I’ve been drinking Alcohol?

NEVER use the Chamber while Intoxicated – remember the Chamber is a medical II device and needs to be handled correctly/carefully to protect the user (That’s you) from harm. I often compare a Hyperbaric Chamber to a bicycle – it’s safe when handled properly. That means – don’t use it if it’s not working properly or you’re buzzed.

Can I allow my pets in the Chamber with me?

No pets are allowed in AHS Chambers. This rule is non-negotiable and results in a $150 penalty if violated. Please remember other folks will be using this device, too. And they might have allergies to pet hair/ dander.

Pets are not allowed in or on the Chamber whether it’s being used or not. Please keep the Chamber covered or in a separate room if you own pets. Note: Cats and Dogs are curious and have done extensive damage to these portable chambers. And YOU are responsible for damage caused by a pet – so please take necessary precautions.

Can I have others use the Chamber while it’s in my possession?

No one other than trained users with prescriptions (that’s you) can use the Chamber! If you’d like someone to try the Chamber please notify AHS and we’ll make arrangements for a free “treatment” once they have a doctor’s recommendation / prescription. Once we instruct them in the safe use of the equipment and potential hazards – they can use the equipment in your possession.

Can children use the Chamber also?

Yes, but only with a doctor’s prescription. Attentive supervision is a must along with patient and thorough instruction. We recommend taking “Dives” together with your child, so you’ll need a script as well.        Larger chambers make this easier and some will even accomodate 2 adults and a child!                          Affordable is our first name and really the main reason we got started 11 yeras ago.                                                We are constantly searching for ways to keep our Chambers “Affordable” for our growing Family of Clients and have traveled the Globe finding the Best of the Best.

Our Job = Keeping it Affordable!

Your job = Using the Equipment Properly!

Can I self-treat or do you recommend someone watching/assisting a person using the Chamber?

Most newer Chambers are designed to allow for self-treatments. That said, AHS recommends having a “buddy” to keep an eye on you while you’re in the Chamber and assisting you in and out of the Chamber. And remember – NEVER sleep in the Chamber, if you feel drowsy – please get out. The Chamber is a safe place – but treat it like you would an automobile, remember – it’s a medical II device and you’re treating yourself under Doctor’s orders.

Can I smoke in the Chamber?

Please don’t make me answer that question!

Can I bring my Chamber outside?

That depends, it is not made to deal with UV or weather issues, but under controlled conditions it can be moved outdoors away from pets / weather / UV / sharp objects. Please never drag the chamber on the floor or ground and always place it on a blanket /carpet rather than on concrete or an abrasive surface. Remember you are responsible for the Chamber while it’s in your possession. So, Use Caution and Always Be Safe!

How many sessions should I treat myself to?

Good question – please ask your physician and use good judgement. We recommend starting slowly. But again follow the advice of your doctor. Many Clinics recommend between 20 and 40 treatments before determining if the Oxygen Therapy is having a beneficial effect. Doctors will work up a protocol for their patients, so please – ask your physician.

How much time should I spend in the Chamber per day? Per week?*

Clinics typically recommend 60 to 90 minute sessions usually every other day, but again ask your doctor and ALWAYS follow his/her instructions.

Many clients use the chamber 5 days per week and take the weekends off.

How Long Does it Take to Be Properly Instructed in the Use of a Hyperbaric Chamber?

In most cases this takes approximately 45 – 60 minutes.  AHS asks that you have the person that will assist you present during our training session so we can train both of you in the proper use of the chamber and Safety Protocols. This may be done in person or remotely – if you live oustide the Denver area.

My schedule is busy – can I get work done while in the Chamber?

Yes, you can bring a Laptop / Cell phone / Tablet and Portable Fan into your AHS chamber and take care of business while you super Oxygenate your Cells.              I  personally exercise in the Chamber and also text / email customers and Family/ Friends. Let’s face it – we’re all living very busy lives. So finding the time for mHBOT for me is easier when I get stuff done in my Forward 90.

Why is it important to train a “buddy” during my training session?

Having someone “keep an eye” on you is important – especially during your first 5  “dives”/sessions. Learning the basics in your training session is just the beginning to understanding how mHBOT works. After 6 sessions you’ll start to get the hang of treating yourself – remember to always control the speed at which the Chamber inflates/deflates by using the provided remote fob. A rapid increase or decrease in pressure can make some folks light headed and ear discomfort can become an issue. If you are in control of the rate of inflation and deflation – you can take it at a pace that is comfortable to you and your ears. Your helper outside the Chamber needs to be instructd on their role assisting you with mHBOT, that probably won’t include adjusting the release valve unless – instructed by you.

How long does it take to pressurize the Chamber fully?

Good question – I can answer that for our most popular Chamber – the Forward 90 Pro Chamber. It has a diameter and height of about 47″ and a Length of about 90″ – it’s powerful compressor delivers 110 Liters of purified air per minute. I can get the Chamber to full pressure in about 7  minutes  – which is comfortable for me. I’d recommend you take it slow until you get familiar with your chamber.  It’s really like riding a bicycle – if you can think back that far – it was shaky at first but, quickly became second nature. Pressurization Times will vary depending on the size of the chamber you’ve selected and the power of the Compressor.  We use mostly upgraded 110 Liter Compressors by OxyRevo.

How long does it take to deflate the Chamber?

I personally allow about 2 to 3 minutes to depressurize my Forward 90 Pro. I let my ears guide me in how quickly to allow the air to escape using the manual release valve. If I start feeling discomfort in my ears, I slow the pressure release process by turning the valve slightly. The air escaping is louder as the valve is opened – much like releasing air from a tire. On some chambers the valve spins freely and on others turns like a hose spigot Open and Close. We provide a remote with most soft shell Chambers to allow the user to turn the compressor on and off from the inside the Chamber. This makes pressure adjustment and complete depressurization easier when you’re ready to get out. It’ll take a few minutes to get the hang of it, but it’s really quite simple. If you feel the need to go more slowly, please do. Also, if the remote stops working (it’s battery operated) no problem – just open the manual valve a bit more to depressurize the chamber.

HBOT Accessories

Do you recommend an Oxygen Concentrator to be used in conjunction with a hyperbaric Chamber?

That is really up to your prescribing physician and some folks prefer breathing pure oxygen during their mHBOT treatments. Note: An Oxygen Concentrator supplies 90% pure Oxygen to the user – far more than the 21% that is found in ambient air.

Never attempt to fill the Chamber with pure Oxygen from a Concentrator. Remember – Oxygen is Flammable when compressed and highly concentrated and ALWAYS  use the Compressor provided to fill your Chamber with purifed air. A hyperbaric Chamber has many built in Safety mechanisms. For instance – 2 relief valves rather than one add redundancy to make your “Dive” safer. The Compressor provided has a maximum output of 6 to 8 psi – the same pressure that a Chamber has been tested to handle safely. If  both relief valves were to malfunction – which would be highly improbable – your Chamber would never burst.

Never replace the auto release valves with higher pressure valves unless instructed to do so by an AHS technician.

And finally your chamber has an auxillary valve which would open at a slightly higher pressur if the normal valves failed to actuate automatically.                  Safety and Redundancy = Confidence and Quiet Calmness

Never use a compressor with this or any other Chamber that is not designed for this intended purpose.

Can I use my own Concentrator while in the Chamber?

That depends – most Concentrators won’t work with Hyperbaric chambers due to the pressures involved.  A standard 5L O2 Concentrator has a Back pressure rating of about 5 psi, whereas a Hyperbaric chamber requires a 20 psi back pressure rating due to the pressure in the Chamber when it’s pressurized. In addition, most Concentrators deliver only 5 liters per minute – a 10 liter per minute rating is recommended inside a pressurized hyperbaric Chamber. But, if you happen to own a 10Liter concentrator then the answer is most likely – yes.

If you want to use a portable pulse flow 02 concentrator in your chamber such as an Inogen G5 – the honest answer is: you won’t be the first  but, we don’t have enough experience to know if the machine will get damaged over time due to the pressure.

So – Better to use our approved and Tested Equipment.

Can AHS provide a platform to facilitate getting in and out of the Chamber?

Yes, a platform is optional. If you decide to purchase a Chamber, we can sell you a very stable plywood platform for $399. This platform would be fabricated and disassembled for shipping – you’d need to reassemble. I have an early version – pictured below.

Is an Oxygen Concentrator Included with my monthly Lease?

Yes, a 10 Liter Oxygen Concentrator rents for $299 a month or $10 per day and is included in our Monthly Rental.– and everything else you’ll need is also included except for a Pillow. If you check around you’ll find that medical equipment suppliers charge about $250 per week to rent cheaper 5Liter Concentrators (and only when they have one available). Note: a small chamber rents for $599 per Month or $20 per day plus a 10L Concentrator at $10 per day bringing the total to $899 per Month or about $30 per day. That’s the Lowest Price in the Country and that’s what we Call Affordable!

Can I lease a Concentrator without a Chamber?

With a prescription – the answer is Yes! It’s $299 a month sans a chamber rental. There’s a $50 delivery fee or you can pick it up at no cost – careful it’s heavy (70 lbs).

What are the upsides and downsides to purchasing a 50% ownership in a Chamber thru AHS?

If you live 40 miles from our location – you’d need to drive the equipment back and forth 3x’s per year to satisfy the shared plan requirements, that’s 120 miles. If you purchase a Chamber outright – there are no rules to follow as you are in total control and no need to disassemble and drive the equipment to AHS– Be aware there are laws that regulate Class ll medical devices such as Hyperbaric Chambers. Remember – you should never allow a person without a proper script to use your Chamber – that could be considered practicing medicine without a license.  With our 50/50 plan – We’d take care of most cleaning and servicing during the 5 years of shared ownership.

If you purchase the equipment outright You would be responsible for all maintenance/cleaning activities so if you allow the chamber to get heavily soiled – no one will be after you to clean it properly, but that’ll shorten its life and likely lower its resale value.

If the equipment fails after the warranty period – and you own the chamber you’d be on the hook for the repair or replacement costs. If the chamber fails through no fault of yours we simply provide you wirh a new or almost new chamber for the reminder of the shared plan at no additional cost.  If this plan interests you – Please call and Let’s chat thru the details!

Why should I buy a 50 stake in a Hyperbaric Chamber thru AHS rather than buying one outright?

Good question – let’s consider the options. If you own a Chamber outright you’d need to buy it either new or used. A new one is expensive if you’re footing the entire bill and the options can seem well – daunting.  A used one, on the other hand, is usually less costly but comes with a host of challenges of its own (see our story). When you co-own a chamber with AHS, we deal with repair & maintenance issues during our service agreement – typically 5 years.  You’ll need to live in close proximity to our facility in Longmont, CO for this to work. You’d own 50% – so, that’s 50% the cost of a chamber, rather than 100%.  If the chamber stops working, we will provide you with a “loaner” chamber that’s the same or silmilar or repair ours without the hassle of packaging and shipping it back to the manufacturer, not to mention the high cost associated with even a small repair of at least $1000. We also deal with the annual maintenance.  You would decide which months you’d  prefer the chamber on a 50% purchase (6 months/year).  It has been our experience that the benefits of HBOT last for weeks/months after a series of treatments, so having use of a chamber for 6 months per year could be enough for most folks (please consult your doctor for his recommendation). Co own vs. Own outright – Call to chat through these options.

Why does AHS sell its Hyperbaric Chambers and 02 Concentrators?

We sell our chambers to clients for the same reason that car rental companies sell their used vehicles. We only rent newer equipment – that is, chambers that are 2 years old or newer.  In fact many of our chambers are less than 6 Months old – when they are sold! Folks that rent cars usually want newer models, so we figured the same would be true for folks that rent mild hyperbaric chambers. The life expectancy of a hyperbaric chamber is (in our opinion) 8 to 10 years – if properly used and maintained. That means – don’t force the zippers and clean the equipment 2x’s year.  Remember to Wash and/or Replace dirty Air Filters and ALWAYS Store equipment at room temperature in a clean spot if it is not being used. The worst mistakes folks make is storing a Chamber in Hot (Attic) or Cold Storage – Both extremes will shorten the Life of your Soft-shell Chamber dramatically. Don’t allow children or pets to jump on it or in it.

Don’t get in the chamber with sharp objects. We run an air purifier in the room where we use our chamber to keep the equipment and filters clean.

Our chambers have lots of life left when we sell them to our clients. So, they’re a very good value. Don’t let your equipment sit for months at a time. Run it as you would an automobile and if you’re not using it consider donating it or sellimg it to someone that will use it.

Our equipment gets cleaned and sanitized then delivered to our clients, maintaining newer equipment that’s inspected and tested frequently – is important to us at AHS!

Our Experience with HBOT

Do you personally use HBOT?

Yes, I use a mild hyperbaric Chamber and have been for more than 10 years now.  I tend to use it about 2 to 3x’s per week even though my goal is 4x’s per week. I’ve found it helps my wife Rachel and I both – with completely separate issues. I breathe much better and am able to exercise when I’m doing sessions in the Chamber, due to our mile high elevation and my shortness of breath – exercising before the Chamber was not feasible.  I also use an oxygen Concentrator during my HBOT sessions of between 60 and 120 minutes. Rachel feels better after a session and swears it helps with inflammation. She deals with backpain and is pain free after her dives. Sometimes, she’ll use it almost everday then when life gets hectic – she might skip 6 days and then back in for another restful dive in our Forward 90 Pro.

Why do we prefer OxyRevo / OxyAir and Newtowne Chambers specifically?

I started 11 years ago in another brand of soft Chamber called Respiro and although the effects of mHBOT were quickly apparent and were better than I would have believed possible – I had lots of “issues” with keeping that high priced FDA cleared Chamber operable.  I tried repairing it on multiple occasions but, eventually gave up and actually tossed it in the trash. That was a $10,000 lesson learned the hard way. Namely, Don’t buy without doing due diligence. After that, I made Lots of calls to the so called “experts” and after interviewing a number of people decided on the 3 brands we handle today – OxyRevo / OxyAir and Newtowne Chambers. Their Quality / Affordability and Warranties were what initially drew me in – their do right by the customer attitude is what kept me coming back year after year.

First, Let’s talk Affordabilty – the price of these 3 brands were ALL much lower than that Respiro model I purchased back in 2015!

Second, Let’s discuss Reliabilty – They have ALL proven to be more Reliable with better Seams /Stronger less problematic Zippers and Superior Windows. The Respiro failed on multiple fronts – Both Seams and Windows Failed on my Respiro!                                                                                                                          Honestly, I’ve never bought a more expensive soft shell chamber and never had a chamber fail so spectacularly!

Finally, Safety is our number one priority and we were excited to see that the same was True for OxyRevo / OxyAir and Newtowne Hyperbarics Chambers!

What’s the most common mistake you’ve made – while using the Chamber?

Not charging my phone prior to entering chamber, it’s important to have a charged phone if you end up needing assistance. And leaving the concentrator running after I exit the Chamber is probably my #1 and #2 Boo Boos. Also, the compressors we use are very quiet – so remember to check that they’re turned off – after each use. It’s easy to accidentally hit the remote switch and turn the compressor back on when you’re exiting the chamber. I’ve also left the inside zipper less than fully closed/docked a few times. I realized it after the chamber was partially inflated and I heard air escaping. This is not a dangerous situation, But – a chamber won’t fully inflate unless all zippers are fully closed. I fully closed/docked the zipper and the chamber pressurized properly. Some of our chambers have 2 zippers and safety straps, others have 3 zippers. Please always check to make certain all zippers are fully closed and all safety straps are fastened while using the Chamber.
